Berea getting more School Resource Officers | Schools
Because of changes in the Berea School District, the City of Berea will increase the number of School Resource Officers from one to three.
Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, Berea and Midpark high schools will merge, nearly doubling the student population at the new Berea-Midpark High School.
The current School Resource Officer, Robert Lages, was hired in 2011, to cover all schools in Berea, public and private.
With the expansion at the high school, Lages will be assigned there, where he deals with counseling, security and bullying issues as well as mentoring and classroom instruction.
Lages is a trained police officer with a master’s degree in criminal justice.
Two new School Resource Officers will cover the elementary schools, including Grindstone Elementary, St. Mary Catholic School and the Academy of St. Adalbert.
They also will assist at the high school as needed.
The School Resource Officers are on duty only when schools are in session.
To cover the costs of the School Resource Officer program and other school security measures, the City of Berea has established a Safe Students Fund.
The Berea schools have already contributed to the fund.
Other donations as well as grants and city funds will be deposited in the Safe Students Fund to cover costs associated with school security such as, the salaries of the School Resource Officers, training, upgrading technology and curriculum materials.
