Berea residents are recycling! | Environment
Since the City of Berea switched to a new automated curbside trash collection and recycling program in November 2012, the amount of trash deposited in landfills has decreased and the amount recycled has more than doubled.
According to statistics provided by Republic Services, the city’s waste collection contractor, the City of Berea dumped 3,868 tons of waste during the first six months of 2012.
Over the first six months of 2013, Republic collected 2,976.9 tons of solid waste. That’s a 23 percent decrease in the amount of waste deposited in the landfill.
During the first six months of 2012, residents recycled 209.66 tons of paper, plastics and other recyclables.
As of June 2013, that number jumped to 497.42 tons – a 137 percent increase.
City residents also recycled 336.76 tons of yard waste so far this year.
